About this template
A floating shelf is a hollow box that slides over a cleat fixed to the wall. The plan gives you both: the cleat with its fixing positions, and the sleeve that hides it.
How much a floating shelf carries depends mostly on the wall and the fixings. Keep the depth modest, fix into studs or solid masonry, and treat these as shelves for books and objects.
What you can change
- Length, depth and thickness of each shelf
- Number of shelves and the spacing between them
- Wall type, which decides the fixings
- Veneer or paint finish
