Step by step

Build it in 15 steps.

Scroll and the model builds with you. Each step ends with a check: don’t move on until it’s true.

  1. Before you start

  2. Check pre-drilled inventory

    Check eight labeled pre-drilled panels: two sides 18 x 293.5 x 1800, three shelves 864 x 293.5 x 24, top/bottom 864 x 293.5 x 18, and back 900 x 6.5 x 1800 mm. Count 20 SPAX 4 x 40 and 15 SPAX 3.5 x 20 T20 screws. For lighting, check four 845 mm Domus Line AT6 ULTRA lights and accessories.

All labeled parts and screw counts match.

TipThe floor-contact bottom has no light or cable route.

  3. Confirm structural core

Confirm WISA-Birch standard cross-laminated core UPM007CPR, not UPM008CPR. Check minimum thicknesses: shelves 22.9 mm, top/bottom and sides 17.1 mm, back 6.1 mm. Keep the oak surface finish separate from structural strength.

Core type and minimum thicknesses are confirmed.

TipShelf face grain runs along the 864 mm span.

Check firstDelivered layup, thickness, and finishing process must be verified before manufacture.

  4. Review shelf load limits

Treat each shelf as planned for 30 kg of uniformly distributed books in a dry interior. Do not assume equal screw sharing, back support, or clamped ends. Keep each shelf end group to two screws as designed.

    All shelves remain unloaded.

TipEffective shelf depth after machining is 260 mm.

Check firstConnection tests, racking evidence, and site restraint evidence are still required; keep shelves unloaded until approved.

  5. Build it

  6. Support the left side

With a helper, lay the left side on a padded bench with its inside face upward. Point all marked front edges the same way. Arrange blocks and clamps to hold perpendicular panels while outside screw entries stay accessible.

    • Left side
    • Two people

The left side is stable and accessible.

TipPad the bench to protect the oak veneer.

  7. Fit bottom to side

Bring the labeled bottom edge to the matching pre-drilled holes in the left side. Keep front edges flush; support the free end and clamp square. Drive two SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws slowly into the conical seats, leaving them loose for squaring.

    • Bottom
    • 2 screws · 4 × 40 mm

The bottom is clamped flush and square.

TipKeep 100 x 30 mm straight driver access.

  8. Fit lower shelf to side

Bring the labeled lower shelf edge to the matching pre-drilled holes in the left side. Keep front edges flush; support the free end and clamp square. Drive two SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws slowly into the conical seats, leaving them loose for squaring.

    • Lower fixed shelf
    • 2 screws · 4 × 40 mm

The lower shelf is clamped flush and square.

TipKeep 100 x 30 mm straight driver access.

  9. Fit middle shelf to side

Bring the labeled middle shelf edge to the matching pre-drilled holes in the left side. Keep front edges flush; support the free end and clamp square. Drive two SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws slowly into the conical seats, leaving them loose for squaring.

    • Middle fixed shelf
    • 2 screws · 4 × 40 mm

The middle shelf is clamped flush and square.

TipKeep 100 x 30 mm straight driver access.

  10. Fit upper shelf to side

Bring the labeled upper shelf edge to the matching pre-drilled holes in the left side. Keep front edges flush; support the free end and clamp square. Drive two SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws slowly into the conical seats, leaving them loose for squaring.

    • Upper fixed shelf
    • 2 screws · 4 × 40 mm

The upper shelf is clamped flush and square.

TipKeep 100 x 30 mm straight driver access.

  11. Fit top to side

Bring the labeled top edge to the matching pre-drilled holes in the left side. Keep front edges flush; support the free end and clamp square. Drive two SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws slowly into the conical seats, leaving them loose for squaring.

    • Top
    • 2 screws · 4 × 40 mm

The top is clamped flush and square.

TipKeep 100 x 30 mm straight driver access.

  12. Fit the right side

With a helper, lower the right side onto all five free panel ends. Match every pre-drilled pair and clamp with front edges flush. Drive ten SPAX 4 x 40 T20 screws from the outside right, working bottom to top and leaving them loose.

    • Right side
    • 10 screws · 4 × 40 mm
    • Two people

All five panels meet the right side.

TipKeep support in place throughout this step.

  13. Square the supported carcass

With a helper, place the supported carcass front-down on a padded flat surface. Compare diagonals, align the panel fronts, and confirm four 423 mm clear bays. Adjust clamps, then seat all 20 SPAX 4 x 40 heads flush in the prepared conical seats.

    • Two people

Diagonals match and all bays measure 423 mm.

TipStop if any head stands proud or sinks below veneer.

  14. Locate the back

Lay the back on the upward rear edges with all perimeter edges flush. Match the pre-drilled holes to their pilots. Drive four SPAX 3.5 x 20 T20 screws from the rear at the uppermost and lowermost side-edge stations, leaving them lightly snug.

    • Full back
    • 4 screws · 3.5 × 20 mm

The back is flush and diagonals are rechecked.

TipPreserve 100 x 30 mm rear driver space.

  15. Complete back connections

Drive the remaining eleven SPAX 3.5 x 20 T20 screws from the rear into pre-drilled pilots: four along side edges, four into top/bottom, and three into shelf rear edges. Work evenly while checking square. Finish all 15 heads flush in the conical seats.

    • 11 screws · 3.5 × 20 mm

All 15 back screws sit flush.

TipStop before crushing the 6.5 mm back.

  16. Fix it and check it

  17. Resolve wall restraint

Keep the unit supported. Install rated anti-tip hardware to the wall substrate and structural attachment points, following the approved system instructions. With a helper, position the unit upright only under controlled support; do not leave it freestanding or load it before restraint is confirmed.

    • Two people

The unit is restrained before any loading.

TipThe 6.5 mm back is not an anchor support.

Check firstWall substrate, hardware, attachment points, and installation details are unresolved; have a qualified installer resolve them.

  18. Complete final inspection

Confirm wall restraint, level, square, all 35 seated fixings, flush panel contacts, and no splits or movement. Check all four lights and service loops if installed. Treat the three 24 mm shelves as screened only for 30 kg uniformly distributed books each.

Nothing moves, splits, or stands proud.

TipUse a straightedge to confirm fixing heads are flush.

Check firstThe 30 kg shelf screen does not establish whole-furniture capacity; keep unloaded until all approvals are complete.

Finishing

Make it last.

Sand and seal

Break sharp edges with 180 grit and sand with the grain, never across it. Veneer is thin: let the paper do the work. Two thin coats of hardwax oil or water-based lacquer protect the faces and the edges, which take most of the knocks.

Fix it to the wall

A tall bookcase can tip when someone pulls on a shelf or a child climbs it. Anchor it before you load it, with an anti-tip fixing that suits your wall: plugs for masonry, cavity fixings or a stud for plasterboard. If you are unsure what your wall is made of, ask before you drill.

Where this plan stands

Caminu checks every design before calling it ready to build. This one still has open points, so read the notes marked Check first and keep the shelves unloaded until they are settled for your build.

What is still being checked · 13
  • SPAX products and 35 nominal solids are documented; plywood-edge compatibility, pilot trial sizes, head bearing, withdrawal, splitting and tightening torque remain unverified. ETA-12/0114 does not approve these receiving plywood edges. Heads use nominal 90-degree cones with sourced maximum-height bounds. T20 recesses are real cut geometry but illustrative, not bit-fit proof; ribs, neck and helical threads are not simulated. Straight 100 x 30 mm driver space is reserved. Confirm stock-specific flush seating and thin-back head bearing.
  • Required use remains 30 kg uniformly distributed books on EACH internal shelf. The trusted construction report calculates routed 24 mm WISA-Birch shelves at 864 mm clear span. Calculated long-term sag is 2.08 mm against 2.88 mm target; bending 2.38/19.45 MPa and shear 0.06/1.30 MPa. Each end group requires 250.14 N vertical design resistance. These are conditional panel results; complete plywood-edge connections, racking and restraint remain unverified. Keep unloaded pending their approval.
  • Wall anchoring unresolved: site substrate explicitly UNKNOWN, rated anti-tip restraint and attachment details require qualified design; do not rely on the 6.5 mm back.
  • No fabrication approval: confirm actual plywood thickness, tolerances, edge distances, machining and assembly trial before manufacture.
  • Saved oak finish remains on all eight panels; structural core is WISA-Birch standard cross-laminated UPM007CPR (2026-01-01, pp. 2-3), not UPM008CPR. Workshop stock: shelf-lower/middle/upper 24 mm nominal, 22.9 mm minimum, face grain X; top/bottom 18 mm nominal, 17.1 mm minimum, grain X; side-left/right 18 mm nominal, 17.1 mm minimum, grain Z; back 6.5 mm nominal, 6.1 mm minimum, grain X. Verify delivered layup, veneer process and thickness; finish adds no credited strength. Edge fastening suitability and overall engineering approval remain unresolved.
  • Lighting proposal: confirm the luminaire/control/driver combination, mounting tolerances, cable route, remaining panel strength and service access. Not approved for manufacture.
  • Lighting proposal: confirm the luminaire/control/driver combination, mounting tolerances, cable route, remaining panel strength and service access. Not approved for manufacture.
  • Lighting proposal: confirm the luminaire/control/driver combination, mounting tolerances, cable route, remaining panel strength and service access. Not approved for manufacture.
  • Lighting proposal: confirm the luminaire/control/driver combination, mounting tolerances, cable route, remaining panel strength and service access. Not approved for manufacture.
  • The three shelf recesses leave 18 mm nominal material in 24 mm stock; the top recess leaves 12 mm in 18 mm stock. The shelf screen conservatively removes projected machining strips through the full thickness; local stresses, splitting, machining tolerances and top-panel loading need separate review. The connection and restraint load hold remains.
  • Each nominal 845 x 6 x 6 mm capsule has R3 ends and 5.5/13.5 mm end reservations using the manufacturer 2.5 mm termination and 8 mm feed detail plus 3 mm lands. Confirm ordered cut length versus assembled end envelopes, rounded-end fit and retention. Sheet recess tolerance is width 6 +/-0.1 mm, depth 6 +0.2/-0 mm; geometry is nominal. At minimum stock thickness and maximum 6.2 mm recess depth, shelves retain 16.7 mm and top 10.9 mm. Confirm delivered thickness and veneer process. Review heat dissipation.
  • Four parallel 8.45 W branches share one proposed supply/controller. 33.8 W load; propose >=42.25 W after derating with 8.45 W margin; actual supply, required headroom, controller/dimming compatibility and protection unresolved. Each 8 mm back hole is for one AT6 connector, not a bundle/grommet. Review feed bends, lead lengths/gauge, edge protection, retention, rear/side wall clearance, enclosure fixing/ventilation, mains separation and accessible connectors. Route is continuous in proposal but surface wiring and fixing geometry are unspecified; no concealed completed wiring or Home Assistant connection is claimed.
  • Saved material choices require review of stock grade, joints, wood movement and shelf capacity before fabrication.
